Issue #209: AUG/SEP 2021

Welcome to the latest edition of Fascination, the Unofficial Cirque du Soleil Newsletter.

IT WAS TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY

Cue up “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” because… it was 20 years ago today that Fascination! came to play (with the fans). Yeah, we’ve been going in and out of style (now for quite a little while), but we’re still here to make you smile. (At least, I hope.) So, let me re-introduce to you the newsletter you’ve known for all these years: Fascination! The Unofficial Cirque du Soleil Newsletter YEAH!

Okay, that was cheesy, I know.

But hey, twenty years is quite an achievement, don’t you think? I couldn’t think of a better or more appropriate way to celebrate this milestone than with The Beatles, one of my favorite bands. Not only are they a great band (I mean, c’mon), they wrote a song just perfect for this specific moment. Besides, I’m long past caring whether I’m cheesy or not in these introductions, or in real life really. I’ve learned to lean into the role over the years… quite heavily some would say (Doug, I’m looking at you.) It comes with age, I suppose; to not take yourself (and the work) so seriously. And to just have fun. To be mellow. And while they don’t call me mellow yellow, I’ve been known to live in a yellow submarine.

We’ve had a lot of fun these past twenty years, haven’t we? Learned a lot about Cirque du Soleil too. It baffles me to think about how young I was when I started this gig, how different the world was back then, or even how different Cirque du Soleil was as a company when we launched in 2001. It’s a different time now, with a different Cirque du Soleil out there. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, but today I’m happy that I can share Fascination! with you and that you enjoy reading it. Today, with all that’s been going on in the world these last few months… that’s more than enough.

And that’s all I really have to say about that. Short and sweet – kind of like our issue this month. Even though Cirque has restarted most of its shows in Las Vegas (by now, Mystere, “O”, MJ ONE, and LOVE have had their restarts), and with KA and DRAWN TO LIFE upcoming, there’s just not much going on in the world of Cirque. So, that being said, I’m not sure whether we’ll publish again in October or November. I guess that’ll depend on what happens between now and then. In the meantime…

Full steam ahead, Mister Boatswain, full steam ahead!
Full steam ahead it is, Sergeant!

Enjoy!
