Mexican government commits $47 million to Cirque du Soleil

The government of Mexico will invest $47.7 million dollars over the next five years to fund a new Cirque du Soleil show.

In a move to promote Mexico’s culture, history and music, the Mexican government has agreed to fund the live performance company’s latest show, Luzia.

Mexico’s secretary of tourism, Enrique de la Madrid, says the show is expected to cover 450 cities around the world over the next 7 years.

“This type of event is another way of promoting Mexico, focused on tourism segments that we want to impact and serve,” he said.

Through the show, Luzia, he explained that about five markets with 320 performances per year are covered.

According to the Tourism Ministry, this show is a result of an agreement signed by the Tourism Board of Mexico (CPTM) with Cirque du Soleil to create a marketing platform that positions the image of Mexico in international markets. The name chosen by Cirque du Soleil, “Luzia” refers to the fusion of the words light rain in Spanish, elements on which the show is based.

In this proposal, the public will see a cast of 45 actors, five of which are Mexicans. The show will hit 15 countries to evoke the Mexican identity to represent characters and animals of the culture in order to move the viewer to a world between dream and reality.

Cirque du Soleil’s latest show, Luzia is where a waking dream transports you to an imaginary Mexico. Experience a wondrous world that inspires you to explore your senses, enveloped in light and nurtured by rain.
