The Drama Desk award was founded in 1955 as the Vernon Rice awards to, as one writer on Wikipedia put it, “to recognize shows produced off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway, and in legitimate not-for-profit theaters, in addition to Broadway shows.” Therefore the Drama Desk is a celebration of all theater productions in New York and Cirque du Soleil, who has played New York numerous times, has been nominated as such in the following categories:
